COAT OF ARMS

Created under Louis XIV (17th century) – the field azure recalls the color of the river. The chevrons may describe the location in a narrow valley.

ETYMOLOGY

Albé (German « Erlenbach », Alsatian « Erlebach»)  is named after the stream which flows through the village, the stream of the alders. “Albé” is the French version adopted in 1919 when the region was returned to France.

AGRICULTURE

Albé is well-known for its vineyards which thrive on the steep shale slopes. They produce Pinot noir. Hence the beautiful wine-growers’ mansions in the village.

INDUSTRY – CRAFTS – COMMERCE

The economy of Albé is based on wine-growing (manufacture of chestnut vineyard poles sold in central Alsace – distilleries). The village has two restaurants, a distillery, a wine-grower. It is a charming place with half-timbered houses adorned with galleries, its activities and a holiday village.

LA PLACE DU TILLEUL (LIMETREE SQUARE)

The limetree : planted in April 1795, this tree symbolic of Freedom changed nationalities five times. The Heritage trail, inaugurated September 2006, starts here. 4.6 km long, it winds its way through the vineyards and offers several scenic view points over the valley. Follow the signs (wine-presses).

The church : built in 1752 on the site of a chapel erected in 1341 in tribute to Saint Wendelin, the patron saint protecting the cattle. That chapel and 42 houses were destroyed in a fire in 1575.

The town-hall : built in 1618 (inscriptions on the gable and on a beam in the Council meeting room). The ground floor was a large hall where the citizens used to meet. It was converted into a school-house in the 19th century.

The guardroom : former jail for the petty criminals or the drunkards.

The Maison du Val de Villé : built in 1709, architecture typical of the Vosges mountains. Interesting features: the octahedrons and a unique heating system.

The museum : built in 1878 near the town-hall. Walls made of sandstone and slate roof. The town-hall and the fire station were there till 1972.

The labourer's house (museum ticket office) : dated 1616. Typical of the architecture in Albé: the house with a wooden gallery.
